How to stay safe with any broker
Account opening guide- 1
Find the broker on the PSX list of TREC holders and on SECP's licensee list before you sign anything.
- 2
Install the app only from the link on the broker's own website. SECP has warned about fake apps copying real broker names.
- 3
Send money only to the broker's company client account. Never to a person, an agent or a mobile wallet in someone's name.
- 4
Your shares must sit in a CDC sub-account in your own name. You get a CDC SMS for every trade and transfer: make sure they reach your phone.
- 5
Register for CDC Access and compare your holdings with the broker app once a month.
- 6
Turn on OTP and fingerprint login, and never share an OTP with anyone, including people who say they are from the broker.
- 7
Do not sign blanket authorisations to move your shares, and switch off discretionary trading.
- 8
Large sums: the PSX compensation fund pays up to Rs1 million per investor if a broker fails. Spread bigger amounts across two brokers or use a CDC Investor Account.
Protections you have
- Your own CDC account
- Shares are held at the Central Depository Company in a sub-account under your CNIC, not in the broker's name. A CDC Investor Account gives even stronger control.
- Separate client money
- SECP rules require brokers to keep client cash in a separate client bank account and send you quarterly statements.
- Compensation fund
- If a broker defaults, PSX pays verified claims from the broker's assets and then up to Rs 1 million per investor from its compensation fund.
