How it works
- Shares. From an amount, we divide by the live price and round down to whole shares. PSX shares now trade in lots of one.
- Gross dividend. Shares multiplied by the last 12 months of cash dividends per share.
- Tax. The company withholds tax before paying you, at the rate for its type and your filer status.
- Income goal. We work backwards: the yearly income you want, divided by the dividend per share after tax, rounded up.

Questions
- How is dividend income calculated on the PSX?
- Multiply the number of shares you own by the cash dividend per share, then subtract the tax the company withholds. For a filer holding 200 shares of a company that pays Rs 15 a share, that is Rs 3,000 gross, Rs 450 tax at 15% and Rs 2,550 paid into your bank account.
- How much tax is deducted from dividends in Pakistan?
- For most listed companies, 15% if you are on FBR's Active Taxpayer List and 30% if you are not. Dividends from power producers passing through costs are taxed at 7.5%, and from companies that pay no tax at 25%, again doubled for non-filers (rates checked 6 October 2026).
- Will a share pay the same dividend next year?
- Not necessarily. The calculator uses the last 12 months of cash dividends, which is a guide, not a promise. Companies cut, raise or skip dividends with their results. Check the company's history and its latest announcements before relying on a figure.
- When do I need to buy a share to get its dividend?
- Before the ex-date. From the ex-date the share trades without the dividend and shows XD next to the symbol. Under T+1 settlement the ex-date is one business day before book closure starts.
